A power drum auger, toilet drum auger, or plumbing snake is a device for clearing clogs from toilet bowl drains. It consists of a long, flexible metal coil with a crank at one end and a metal spike at the other. The handle and tip are connected by a metal strip that runs through the center of the coil, and turning the handle rotates the tip. A typical power drum auger is about 3 feet (1 m) long, which is long enough to clear most blocks in toilet waste lines.
A drum auger is used to unclog toilets.
A drum auger is intended for use in and around toilet bowls. A power drum auger is a more powered tool than a cabinet auger, with a thinner, more flexible coil designed to fit into traps and drains that are more fragile than a toilet drain line.
A power drum auger helps remove clogs from drain pipes, including those used for toilet plumbing. The usual procedure for using a drum auger is to insert the head of the tool into the toilet drain and push it until you find the clog. By turning the handle, you turn the head, barbed, or designed as a spiral, and pass it through the lock.
Once the clog is cleared and the water begins to drain, the user removes the head from the drain, and the clog usually goes with it. Working around a toilet involves the inherent possibility of being exposed to unsanitary conditions, so it’s a good idea to wear rubber gloves and take other steps to prevent contamination, including washing thoroughly after the repair is complete.

Since the reach of a drum auger is limited to 1 meter (3 feet), it cannot access obstructions deep in the waste line. For a clog not near the toilet, an auger may be inserted through an access opening, such as the cleanout located at the bottom of the waste pile. With one person sinking the toilet to move the clog down, another operates the auger from further down the line, and the action of the head breaks the clog gradually as it gets closer. When the water flows, the obstruction can be removed with the auger.
When a plunger won’t help unclog a toilet, a power drum auger can.
Drain flushing is a technique that uses high-pressure water to maximize clog removal and sewer line cleaning and can be used in residential or commercial applications. High-pressure power drum augers are usually less expensive in the long run, leading to frequent plumbing problems and repeat visits from your local plumber.
